A Chrome extension that brings vintage CRT monitor aesthetics to any webpage has arrived, complete with display presets spanning from 1920s mechanical screens through 1990s color CRT technology. The developer created the tool to evoke nostalgia while exploring the technical challenges of recreating these retro visual effects in a modern browser environment.
During development, the creator made deliberate design choices around accessibility and user safety. Sound effects and rapid animation frequencies were intentionally excluded due to potential health risks—oscillating audio can be problematic for younger users, while low-frequency flickering poses concerns for those with photosensitivity. The developer notes that while audio effects may return in future updates using alternative implementation methods, the current visual flicker effect already captures the authentic CRT experience effectively.
The extension welcomes user feedback as it continues to evolve.
